A REVIEW ON FORMULATION OF MATRIX TABLETS AS SUSTAINED RELEASE

Matrix tablet affords advantage over oral conventional dosage form in reducing the dosing frequency by appropriately monitoring all pharmacokinetic parameters. Though the oral route is the most common route of administration of drugs in long-term therapy for the treatment of chronic disease conditions, administration of sustained release dosage form is the method of choice. Matrix tablets are developed by either direct compression or wet granulation methodology by employing a kind of deliquescent or hydrophobic polymers. The rate of drug release from the matrix is primarily governed by rate and extent of water penetration, swelling of polymer, dissolution and diffusion of drug. Hydrophilic polymers became product of selection as a very important ingredient for formulating sustained unleash formulations. The aim of the study is to unveil the important parameters so as to formulate a sustained release dosage form in order to maintain therapeutic drug level in plasma for extended period of time after administration of a single dose.
